Custom Made Insoles (CMI)
The use of foot orthosis is an integral part of the overall treatment in diabetic patients who have foot symptoms, structural or postural abnormalities, or are in need of foot protection to prevent complications due to the peripheral neuropathy which is often associated with diabetes. CMI is an effective method to reduce high plantar pressure. There are several methods to produce CMIs but most of them are dependent on the experience of the orthotist. The lack of orthotist in developing countries, increase the need for an alternative way to produce CMIs that can reliably reduce plantar pressure. CMI can be electronically produced based on data obtained from plantar pressure measurements.
How CMI is produced
1- Pressure distribution devices are based on the effect of changes in the electrical properties of sensors, caused by the mechanica l deformation of its material. Therefore, pressure beneath the foot become plotted on the computer screen.
2- Special computer software design electronic CMI to redistribute pressure from high pressure points into the entire plantar aspect of the foot.
3- Milling machine transform the computer design into a final product using insoles of different materials.
Indications of CMI
Diabetic patients with any of the following complications:
- Insensate Peripheral Neuropathy
- Deformities
- High Plantar Pressure
- Calluses
- Previous Foot Ulceration
